Husky Owner Discovered Her Dog Befriended a Deer When She Came Home After 3 Days

In late December 2018, a woman’s beloved female Siberian Husky went missing. She searched the woods for days but to no avail. The dog returned after a few days as nothing happened. The woman wondered what happened, and it was not until she checked with her neighbor’s trail camera in the woods by their home did she learn of the dog’s whereabouts the past days. She discovered that the Husky had not lost her way home but because she was with a deer the whole time.

According to “The Dodo,” Rachel Howatt from Manitoba, in Ontario, Canada, raised a female Siberian Husky named Koda. She realized one day in late December 2018 that Koda had disappeared. Searching the woods for her resulted in disappointment. Resorting to social media, she posted a notice online, hoping nearby netizens had seen Koda. However, the Husky returned home on her own after a few days as though nothing happened.

“We definitely searched for her, but in the end, she just came back,” Rachel said. “She is really smart, so I didn’t doubt she could find her way home.”

Rachel then went to her neighbor to check on their trail camera if Koda showed up on it. What she discovered on the monitor screen stunned her. A buck (male deer) was huddling with her the whole night. For an entire evening, Koda was playing, eating, sitting, and napping with the buck, who did not seem bothered by the Siberian Husky being with him all the time. The Husky and the buck seem to have bonded.

“It was quite something,” Rachel said. “Based on the time they spent on the frame, it looked like they spent over 12 hours together. There’s also another photo where there’s two bucks in the picture with her.”

It was not the first time a deer befriended a pet. They are also known to bond with runaway cows and even domesticated cats when they encounter each other in the woods. Although Rachel took extra precautions so Koda would not run away again, she felt that her beloved husky would want to reunite with her friend from the wild someday.

“Huskies have such a free spirit,” Rachel said. “It doesn’t surprise me at all that Koda was trying to make a new friend.”
