This must be the grandest 50th wedding anniversary so far! A dedicated husband wondered what the perfect gift he could provide his lovely wife would be on their upcoming golden anniversary. Pondering at the thought, he soon produced the most romantic and memorable gift he could imagine.
Lee Wilson and his wife Renee’s love story started in high school. When Lee learned that Renee could not date until she was 16, he patiently waited. When she turned 16, he immediately called her and invited her to their first date – a roller-skating party. They were inseparable since then.
Fast forward to their 50th wedding anniversary, Lee wanted to especially surprise her with a gift she will never forget. Reminiscing on the years they spent together, he searched for the perfect gift. Suddenly, it came to him. He remembered that Renee loved sunflowers.
He considered surprising her with a field of her favorite flowers. “I put a lot of thought into it, and she always liked sunflowers,” Lee said in an interview with KAKE News. “And I thought this is the year to plant sunflowers, so I planted her 80 acres of sunflowers.”
Secretly, Lee put his plan into action in May together with his son. By the time their 50th anniversary arrived on August 10, approximately 1.2 million sunflowers were standing tall in the field, swaying in the breeze, all dedicated to Renee. Renee’s reaction was priceless!
“It made me feel very special,” Renee gushed. “It couldn’t have been a more perfect anniversary gift than a field of sunflowers.”
However, the gift of the sunflower exhibition did not just amaze Renee. Their farm instantly became a tourist attraction, gar nering admirers from all over Kansas. Would Lee do the heartwarming gesture again sometime? He chuckled, “Oh, it’s been fun, but I think one time is enough for us. It’s somebody else’s turn next year.”
Although the field of sunflowers is a one-time surprise for Renee on their 50th anniversary, it is a testament to the great lengths one can go to prove their love to their special someone. Perhaps it may also serve as an inspiration for others to “think outside the box” when planning on surprising their loved ones on a special occasion.
Lee’s surprise at a sunflower field is more than just a romantic gesture. It is a proof of how powerful love can be.
Through the years, Lee and Renee faced challenges and celebrated milestones. However, these only strengthened their bond. The sunflowers stood tall and proud, which mirrored their strong love for each other. Amazingly, the sunflowers equaled out to 15,000 sunflowers per acre!
