A Father with Down Syndrome Raised a Son Who Became a Doctor

Sader Issa, a doctor in Syria, shares a story that has touched hearts around the world—a story about his father, Jad, who has Down Syndrome.

Growing up, Sader never felt like he was missing anything. His father might have been different in the eyes of others, but to Sader, he was just “Dad”—loving, kind, and endlessly supportive. Jad filled their home with warmth, and he did everything he could to give his son a happy, normal childhood.

“He gave me so much love,” Sader says. “He supported me through everything, always by my side, cheering me on.”

Jad works at a nearby mill, and many in their community know him well. They admire his generous spirit—he gives love freely, never expecting anything in return. For Sader, his father is more than a parent; he’s a role model. “I’m proud of my father,” he says. “He helped shape the person I am today.”

The bond between them is something special. They often walk to the mill together, side by side—father and son, best friends.

Sader hopes people understand that having Down Syndrome doesn’t mean someone can’t be a wonderful parent. “People with Down Syndrome are different, yes—but they have dreams, feelings, and so much love to give. They can live full, meaningful lives—especially with the support and acceptance of those around them.”

There are very few documented cases in the world of fathers with Down Syndrome raising children, but Sader and Jad are living proof that it’s possible—and beautiful.

One of the most emotional moments Sader recalls is when his father proudly tells people, “My son is a doctor.” You can see the pride in Jad’s eyes, the joy on his face—as if to say, “Yes, I have Down Syndrome. But I raised a doctor. I gave him everything I had.”

This story reminds us that love doesn’t need to be perfect—it just needs to be real. And sometimes, the strongest families are the ones that break the mold.
