The sound of cicadas calling on a summer morning is usually refreshing, but spotting one this big in your home? Unthinkable. Recently, a Japanese pet owner had quite the shock. After a quick bathroom break, he came back to find an enormous “cicada” clutching the curtains, wings spread wide. His heart nearly skipped a beat.

Looking closer, though, he realized the truth: the “cicada” was actually his pet owl, Kohaku. Somehow, Kohaku had flown up and clung to the curtains, wings spread in such a way that he looked just like an enormous cicada—or even a moth. The resemblance was so uncanny that online commenters joked it was “a cicada that chirps even at night.”
In reality, Kohaku has a fierce and regal look, but he’s known for his endearing, almost comedic personality. His owner often shares photos and videos of Kohaku on Twitter, and fans can’t get enough of his mix of attitude and humor. If you’re curious, you can follow their adventures on Twitter too!
